(Part 1 here)

Since the audio part for the talks given at MozCamp Berlin don’t seem to have come out yet, here’s a summary of what we have talked about at the WoMoz talk given with Clarista during the event (slides can be found here). It can basically be divided into 2 main parts: What’s Been Done, and What’s to Come.

What’s Been Done

So here’s a description of the projects that we’ve mainly been working on since Women & Mozilla started:

Interviews (blog and video) presenting women in Mozilla as well as women in Open Source. The main goal being to give more visibility to women in FLOSS

Creation of a Bonjour WoMoz (every Thursday) that basically presents Mozilla women and friends. We’ve also created a Planet WoMoz, that syndicates the blogs of Mozilla women

3rd year in a row that we’re working with University of Évry students (Comete Course) on WoMoz and Mozilla related projects

Collaboration with other women in FLOSS groups, networking with women in computing groups

Open World Forum (2010 edition): Creation of a Gender Equality Group. We then led a brainstorming workshop within the forum in order to create a European Diversity Charter that could be approved by all IT and Open Source companies (still ongoing): http://wiki.april.org/w/OpenWorldForum_GenderEquality%26Diversity

Trying to create role models for young girls to identify with

Giving talks in classes from primary school to university

Numerous and regular talks during events: FOSDEM, Ubuntu Parties, RMLL, JDLL, etc.

Launched the 1st PyStar Paris workshop (second to come soon!), thanks to Lukas Blakk’s great initiative. Women gathered in the Mozilla Paris office to learn the basics of Python

Organization of meet-ups, workshops, meetings to discuss WoMoz and future projects

Surveys to gather the impressions and feedback of women in the Mozilla community, as well as from the entire Mozilla community

and more…

What’s to Come

The points above are still ongoing, and to that we can add:

Working on more local / regional actions: every country and every community is different and we can be even more effective if we increase our regional impact through local projects and events

Further increasing our presence in schools (starting in primary), highschools and universities, where young children can be educated about open source and Mozilla. Goal: increasing awareness at an early age about open source technologies and philosophy, both amongst girls and boys. Acting as role models for girls, but also for everyone in general

Increasing our presence in wider-public events, such as music festivals or artistic events

Creating an on-board guide for new members. This will be in the wiki and will be a step-by-step explanation of how we got involved in our own contribution fields within Mozilla

Fact: we need to find more people to write in the blog!

Further information and details concerning some of these points can be found on Clarista’s blog post here

and more

A special thanks to the people who attended the talk and came up with GREAT ideas for future projects, which we’ll blog about soon. And remember, if you want to help us out, join us on the WoMoz mailing list or go to our website and join whatever communication tool works best for you!

On September 30th was held the Open Diversity Summit during the Open World Forum event. The entire day was dedicated to the main topic Why Women Matter?

I particularly wanted to give some details concerning the workshop we have worked on with Rayna (from April), and that she animated during the afternoon. It was entirely dedicated to creating a Diversity Charter / Statement, intended for FLOSS businesses and communities. Women and men from many different nationalities and from both FLOSS companies and communities participated, and the workshop was quite animated with thoughts and ideas during the entire session.

It is of course impossible during only 2 hours to create an entire Diversity Charter, so we decided that we’d start by establishing the bases for it and draw out the main lines. You can find Rayna’s notes from the session here: http://wiki.april.org/w/OWF_GED_workshop

In the end, it was decided that we would create a work-group that would continue to work on this Charter after the workshop. If you are interested in participating, please feel free to join us on the dedicated mailing list here: http://www.april.org/wws/info/owf-ged (the ml is in English, as well as the wiki)

We hope that this Charter will be adopted by many companies and communities. We intend on working on a “hackable” charter, in order that a maximum of interested companies / communities will be able to adapt it to their particular needs.

As it is also one of WoMoz’ 2010 Roadmap items, we hope that this Charter can be something that we can adopt and, once it is clearly established and ratified, that Mozilla will eventually want to use as well.

So women, men, and basically everyone… join us in the creation of this Diversity Charter, so it can reflect all our beliefs and needs! We would love to have your help and ideas, so that this Charter can be representative of us all, and be as open and participatory as possible.

And a special “Thank You” to April and to Frédéric Couchet for letting us continue to use the mailing list and wiki for this work

nb. This post is almost the same as I previously published on my personal blog. However since we have really started working on this charter since, I thought it was important to make another call for participation.

Quick post to announce that we’ve counted the number of women employed in Mozilla (so this means counting people from Mozilla Corp, Foundation, contractors and interns) with Pascal Chevrel and here are the numbers we have reached:

there are 68 women out of a total of 406 people, so this means a percentage of 16.75% women in Mozilla (Data collected from the Mozilla internal phone book). This is quite a good result when you consider that the percentage of women in FLOSS is more around 2% (according to FLOSSPOLS)

Of course this number will probably be fluctuating quickly as there are continuously new people coming to work in Mozilla, as well as employees leaving. But we’ll regularly keep track of these changes, and let you know if any significant change in numbers occurs.

Here is a quick diagram that gives an overview of what these women are working on and in which domains:

Also, the results of the internal WoMoz survey concerning the women active contributors in Mozilla are currently under analysis. The goal of this survey was to get a better overview of the profile of women contributing in Mozilla, as well as gather their activities and perceptions in the institution. The main purpose of the survey is to detect areas of improvement related to gender issues in Mozilla and FLOSS communities. The WoMoz survey team is working right now on comparing their analysis, and we’ll of course share all this publicly once it’s done. But we do hope the numbers will be as positive for contributors as it is for the employees!

Stay tuned…

Time for a (long overdue) overview of what has been happening in the Women & Mozilla project since our last update.

Mainly, we have been very busy with accomplishing the tasks from our 2010 WoMoz Roadmap, just as we had planned and announced. Here are some more details concerning this long-term task, as well as our other activities:

2010 Roadmap

What has been done

We have successfully accomplished the first steps of our Roadmap and followed our predetermined milestones accordingly. Only the survey is taking us longer to create than we expected (especially concerning the elaboration of the survey questions), while some future tasks have been started in advance, such as working on creating a Newcomers Team and mentorship program.
So what does this mean concretely?
We have mainly worked internally, contacting leaders throughout the various – and numerous – Mozilla communities in order to find out who and where the Mozilla women contributors are. This first phase permits us now to have a general and more accurate idea of who these women are, what they work in, how long they have been contributing, as well as the proportion of women and men in these teams (list to be published soon).
We know of course that it is difficult to find *all* the contributors, however this will help us gain a much better overview and perspective than we had before.
Concerning the Newcomers Team and mentorship program, we are currently brainstorming on ways to integrate this idea within the general Mozilla project. You may find notes concerning these ideas and this projects on our Meeting Notes page here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/WoMoz/StatusMeetings

What still needs to be done

As mentioned above, we still need to finish elaborating the internal survey questions. This survey will be distributed amongst the women contributors in Mozilla that we have contacted and that have contacted us as well. We will also elaborate a specific survey for the Mozilla women employees.
The main goal of this survey is to have an overview of the profile of the women working and contributing in Mozilla, as well as their activities and perceptions in the institution.
The purpose of the survey will be to detect areas of improvement related to gender issues in Mozilla and FLOSS communities for further actions and to give more visibility to women’s work.
More info and notes about the survey can be found here.

WoMoz side-tasks

As you can notice, our blog has a new theme now. It still has some minor issues and bugs to fix, however the theme is practically ready to rock & roll! A big and special thanks to Béatrice Kreng and Julia Buchner for having dedicated so much of their time on this.
Also, we are currently working on a fun Fortune package that we would like to integrate into Linux distributions. It will basically be like the Wanda Fortune Fish that already exists on Ubuntu for example, with quotations from famous women.
A more detailed list of our side-tasks can be found here.

What we still need help with

The two main areas were we still need help and volunteers with are: writing articles on the blog and making videos. If you are interested in helping out, please don’t hesitate to contact us or leave a comment below.

Update on the number of community members & contributors

Mailing List -> 80 people

Wiki Members -> 28 registered users

IRC -> around 15 online (during European Time Zone)

Facebook WoMoz Fan Page -> 140 fans

More info and details about the WoMoz Project:

Our Meeting Notes

Directly on our Website

As always, feel free to join us for our meetings if you’re interested! They’re open to *all* and any suggestions for the project are welcome.

Last week-end I went to the ULB of Bruxelles for the 10th edition of FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Software Developers European Meeting). For this event which grouped more than 200 lectures, Women & Mozilla was present with the many members from the Mozilla community. In the WoMoz program, 2 workgroup sessions Saturday and Sunday morning, with a lightning talk on Sunday afternoon. During these 2 days, we were able to meet WoMoz contributors as well as members from other floss projects.

The workgroup sessions has helped us to establish a 2010 roadmap for the project. We agreed that Womoz’s action should firstly be divided into two categories:

internal actions: correspond to a diagnosis and analysis of the communities, as well as an improvement of the visibility of women contributors in Mozilla

external actions: it will be a question of creating tools in order to modify the vision that the “general public” has of FLOSS and Mozilla projects.

You can find the complete notes from these sessions and the 2010 Roadmap on the wiki: http://www.womoz.org/wiki/doku.php?id=fosdem2010_daily_agenda

During 15 min on Sunday evening, Delphine Lebédel and Alix Cazenave spoke in the Mozilla DevRoom about the project:

Women & Mozilla will be holding two brainstorming workshops in Brussels (Belgium) on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of February, on the side of the FOSDEM event.

The main goal of these workshops will be to establish a 2010 Roadmap for the WoMoz project.

A daily agenda has been established for both workshops. The various items contained in the two daily agendas will be subject to discussion. By the end of the week-end, we should have defined our roadmap for the year and determined how to achieve these 2010 goals – our main and number 1 goal being to increase the number of women contributors in Mozilla, and by extension in FLOSS.

Discussions will be held in a more informal way and we encourage attendees to participate actively during the brainstorming. The workshops will be open to all (men are welcome to participate, as in all WoMoz activities).

On Sunday at 1:00pm Alix Cazenave and Delphine Lebédel will be holding a 10min talk in the Mozilla DevRoom in order to present WoMoz to the communities and sum up our week-end workshops.

During the Fosdem event, WoMoz will also have a section at the main Mozilla booth (with brand new badges, flyers and stickers), so don’t hesitate to drop by!

WoMoz will be present at the FOSDEM event this year (6-7th of February 2010, in Brussels, Belgium) and holding some side sessions during the week-end. These sessions will mainly consist in brainstorming and establishing a 2010 Roadmap for the Women & Mozilla project. Both women and men are welcome to participate in these sessions if they are interested.

Goals of the WoMoz Gathering at FOSDEM

interact with women developers present at FOSDEM and encourage them to participate in the FOSDEM WoMoz sessions

try to draw more European developer profiles into participating and contributing in WoMoz and Mozilla

establish some kind of 2010 Roadmap for the WoMoz project: open a dedicated wiki page for this and start it during fosdem, in order to leave fosdem with something concrete to continue after the event

Proposed Topics

schedule still TBD exactly, so feel free to suggest any ideas for talks / discussions by sending me an email here: delphine at mozilla dot com. We’ll have a dedicated room for the sessions at least 2 hours on both Saturday and Sunday mornings to discuss these topics

establish a WoMoz Roadmap for 2010 and finish tying up “loose ends”

finish the discussion on how to get organized: who wants to do what?

the importance of being visible

ongoing projects

how to collaborate efficiently with other existing women’s groups?

Propose a Topic to Discuss during the WoMoz Sessions

As the exact WoMoz schedule has not been determined yet, feel free to suggest topics you’d like to discuss then!

You can do so by either:

- leaving a comment under this post

- sending me an email: delphine at mozilla dot com

Thank you
