Flore Allemandou, The New WoMoz Project Leader!

[Joint post by Delphine Lebédel and Flore Allemandou]

– Delphine Lebédel :

We have important and great news to announce: Flore Allemandou, long-time French Mozilla contributor (in the mozfr project) and amongst the very first members of WoMoz, is taking the leadership of the project as of NOW!!! We are all super excited about this, and can’t wait to start working with her in driving the project forwards.

In fact, I have recently decided to step away from WoMoz leadership, for various reasons that I have explained to the WoMoz community. Briefly: I want to commit entirely to the tasks that have been assigned to me within my new role in Mozilla, and do not have enough free time to dedicate to WoMoz (which I was working on during my free time). It was a hard decision to take, and I have thought about it during a loooong time before taking this decision. But I feel and believe that the project now needs to continue growing thanks to someone who can entirely commit to it – which is not my case. And who better than Flore, who has seen this project grow from it’s very beginning, and has always dedicated so much love and effort to it, to take it on from now? It is with the utmost trust and joy that I pass on the “reins” to this incredible and devoted woman! I am sure she will be an excellent leader, and do not regret a second this decision, although it was hard to take.

I will of course continue to follow the project, and contribute to punctual actions when I am sure I can fully commit to them. WoMoz will in some way always stay my baby, and I can’t wait to watch it grow!

I would like to stay brief and just let Flore fully take on her new role and let her introduce herself now, so I will finish now by saying: THANK YOU WOMOZ ALL OVER THE WORLD. You are beautiful people, you have helped me grow in many ways, and I have learned so much thanks to you. Thank you for your support, for your help, for your hard work, for your joy and all the fun I had 🙂

This is not an “adieu”, but an “au-revoir, et à très vite !”

And long Live WoMoz!!! 🙂 You all rock!

-Flore Allemandou:

When Delphine told the committee she was stepping down from the project, we were stunned at first. Then we began to think who could take her role in the project. A few days later, Kensie sent an e-mail explaining how the project could be driven a bit differently and then avoid the issues we encountered previously that slowed down womoz. In that email, she wrote (on purpose) “let’s say Flore volunteers”… As I read this email, I asked myself “Do I volunteer?”, I already knew the answer: of course, I volunteer! Nonetheless, I decided to take one day of reflection: “I want, but can I do this?” and other questions came into my head. At the end of the day, I heard a small voice telling me “Is there an imposter syndrom out there? Or is it just me?”. And I knew I could do this or at least try my best.

Kensie did not force my hand. But she told me subtly, that she thought I might do a good job there. It’s very important to know that you are not alone and that friends believe in you and will stand by your side. I may be taking the leadership, but we are a team and together we will lead womoz forward. My role will be to lead discussions, set timelines, assign tasks, make decisions if needed and avoid endless and unproductive debates. And if I ever turn to a dictator, it’s everyone’s role to protest.

We have plans for womoz at the summit, we are working on that. We may even have some surprises. My own wish is that we meet as many WoMoz as possible in every location and discuss what we want for womoz, what we could do, what you expect us to do. I will be in Brussels and I’ll be glad to talk about WoMoz, don’t hesitate! The only thing that would annoy me is hearing afterwards “I saw you, but did not want to bother you…”

I have faith in WoMoz, and in the days of doubts we went through, a sentence came back to my mind “Faith manages.”. Believe me, it does!

[Event] An Accessible Web

Goal achieved , after a long hours of work with the pupil of El Walid center and a great day to close the initiative,we were able to pass our message and explain well the womoz program.

the project: “An Accessible Web“finally took place, and the closing event lasted 4 hours. At the begining a competetion took place  between the pupils. Everyone has to do a web page for his mother on the occasion of Mother’s day.

The thimble project “Happy Mother’s Day”  was considered as a model and they had to fill out the HTML part( fill out the <body> of the page was the objective) with what they have learned during the training session.

What they did exactly:

  • Place an image in a markup <div> with two titles which one is lage and the other one small.
  • Write a paragraph in an other <div> with newlines.
  • Result with the time spended on this work

there was 4 excellent students who had been well coding their page during 30 minutes.

And when we announced the end of the competetion, we moved to the other theater’s room of the center to present the work of the students and womoz community.

Some screening have been done.

To conclude , we gave some certificates to the students whose references range from excellent, very good , good and not bad. we wanted to give them a souvenir and specially make their work appreciated. We also gave them some mozilla’s swags as little symbolic gifts.

Afterwards I introduced the Women and Mozilla initiative! Why it is important, what are its goals and what can we do to improve the presence of women in open source projects.

The speakers then talked about how women and men who support the cause can contribute in this cause. I explained that we do not wish to discriminate genders but instead promote gender equality where needs of women are addressed to help them get past the hindrances that stop them from being involved in the tech industry.

Mozilla Rep Joell Lapitan talked about how they can contribute as developers.

The ‘father’ of the Student Ambassadors in the Philippines, Kemuel Joeph Domanog talked about the newly launched program, encouraging the student attendees by sharing what he had experienced being involved and what improvement it brought to his personality.

Another girl Mozilla Rep from the Philippines, Joyce Domanog talked about Firefox OS and how she got involved with Mozilla and open source even though she is a business major.

Mozilla Rep Robert “Bob” Reyes talked about the Webmaker project and how women can help in the project’s goal to make everyone a web maker.

Ms. Michelle Santos talked about Globe Labs and how women are involved in their projects.

Lastly, WebFWD scout Monique Almario talked about WebFWD and the opportunities that await them in the program.

[Project Update] An Accessible Web – Special Program

For prior updates on my project, please see here and here

After a long time spent working with the students on web technologies and Mozilla projects, it’s time to organize a final event to celebrate the work accomplished.

This will take up a day during which each group will present the work they have been doing over the past few months. Additionally there is a competitive element between the presenting groups.

As well as developing their knowledge of webmaker project and technologies, they were able to create a webpage where they knew the whole structure of an HTML document.

Here are some examples of their work:

It should be noted that before working on the computer, we do a lot of work on paper. This allows for better and quicker uptake of things. Once that is done, we spend time on examples. The start of each class was spent on reviewing the previous classes. The less able students perhaps had some additional difficulties when they had to memorise things. The use of simple examples does not in anyway detract from their hard work.

The final session will be on May 30th 2013. It’s a friendly competition for people who were on the course. The topic is Mother’s Day (similar to to the thimble project called “Happy Mom’s Day”)

I’ll use this model and change the css and content a bit. It’ll then be up to the students to fill the HTML content.

You’ll find the details of the day here, feel free to add any suggestions
